Over 9,000 Applicants Shortlisted for Abia Teacher Recruitment, CBT Soon

Abia State Government has picked 9,371 people for the teacher recruitment process. These people will take a computer-based test (CBT) soon. The date for the test will be announced later.

The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, said this while talking to journalists about what happened at the State Executive Council meeting. The meeting was led by Governor Alex Otti.

He explained that the application portal closed on February 12, 2025, and all applications were checked.

“The portal for the recruitment of teachers was shut down on the 12th February 2025, and at the last count, about 29,797 applications were received.

“Out of this number, 9,371 applications were shortlisted, and the shortlisted applicants would take a CBT as earlier announced.

“Those who pass the test will be called for an interview. After that, the successful ones will get the job. The recruitment process will be fair and based on merit,” Prince Kanu said.

He also talked about a new education project called ABIAFIRST. Governor Alex Otti will launch it on February 26, 2025. The theme is “Re-imagining Education in Abia, Unleashing the Potential of Every Abia Youth.”

Prince Kanu said this project would change the education system in Abia. It will help students get world-class learning opportunities.

He also announced that the government has made the Igbo language a compulsory subject in schools. It will be taught from primary school to SS2.

“The Igbo language, which is our identity, has been made compulsory in our schools up to SS2 level. This is to make sure our children are grounded in their mother tongue.

“It’s hoped that making Igbo compulsory will help drive the cultural and social change that this government wants,” he said.

He added that the government has also brought back the study of History in Abia schools. This will start immediately.

“Any society that wants to progress must keep its history. We believe Abia state has a rich history, and we want our children and future generations to learn about it,” he said.

The Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Elder Goodluck Ubochi, also spoke. He said that History was made compulsory in the past, but most of what was taught was just a repeat of Civic Education.

“There is a new curriculum that is about to be released. It has been approved. By next academic year, that new curriculum will be used. But one good thing is that the state has the right to adjust a curriculum to fit our needs.

“So, we are going to adjust the curriculum. We will add important historical facts about the Igbo people so that every child who finishes secondary school will know the basic history that makes Igbos different from others,” Elder Ubochi said.

On the teacher recruitment process, Elder Ubochi shared good news. He said Governor Otti has increased the number of teachers to be hired.

“Last time I was here, I told you that the State Executive Council approved the recruitment of 2,500 teachers.

“But today, after checking the number of children in our schools due to free and compulsory education, we asked the Governor to allow us to employ more teachers.

“By the end of this process, about 5,000 teachers will be employed,” Elder Ubochi assured.

Other government officials were also present at the briefing. They include Mazi Ugochukwu Okoroafor, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Monitoring and Evaluation, Mr. Ferdinand Ekeoma, the Governor’s Media and Publicity Adviser, and Ctz. Ukoha Njoku Ukoha, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor.

Meanwhile, recall that Abia State Teachers Recruitment took place recently.
